Please sign in to see more. The Wearmouth surname originates from the Sunderland area of the County Palatinate of Durham, England.
Sunderland at the mouth of the River Wear, was split between Bishopwearmouth, under the the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Durham and Monkwearmouth, under the Monastary of Jarrow.
This Wearmouth branch started in the Billingham area of County Durham, moving into Upper Weardale at the end of the 17th centuary. By the end of the 18th centuary, some of the family had moved into Teesdale.
The males were mostly in lead mining or limestone quarrying. As the lead trade decreased and the quarries closed, the families tended to gravitate down the dale to the coalfields of the Wear Valley.
Family occupations, besides Miners & Quarrymen,have included Farmers, Mechanical & Electrical Engineers, Railwaymen, Painters, Potters, Printers and Local Businessmen. Family members saw military service during the two world wars and at least one had a full military career.

The research is an ongoing operation and additions to the site are made as they come to light.
